OpenCalorie is a smart, privacy-first calorie and macro tracker for iPhone. Powered by the world's largest open food database — no subscriptions, no hidden fees, no data selling.
Everything you need
A complete nutrition toolkit that respects your time and privacy, built entirely with native Apple technologies.
Instantly scan any food product with your iPhone camera. Supports EAN, UPC, QR codes and more. Nutritional data loads in seconds from the Open Food Facts database.
Track calories, protein, carbohydrates, and fat for every meal. Visual macro bars give you an at-a-glance breakdown of your daily nutrition.
Sync active calories burned during workouts from Apple Health. When you exceed your daily goal, workout calories automatically extend your budget — so you're never penalized for exercising.
Save your go-to foods and meals to your personal fridge. Build meal templates from saved items for lightning-fast logging of repeat meals.
Your meal history syncs seamlessly across all your Apple devices via iCloud. No account registration needed — works automatically with your Apple ID.
Import your height, weight, and age directly from Apple Health during onboarding. Your calorie goal is calculated automatically using the Mifflin–St Jeor formula.
Keep your daily calorie goal front and center with a beautiful home screen widget. See your progress, remaining calories, and macros at a glance — no app opening required.
Share any food item or entire meal with friends via AirDrop, iMessage, or any other app. Shared meals open directly in OpenCalorie with all nutritional data intact — no server involved.
Authenticate privately with Sign in with Apple, or skip sign-in entirely and use local-only mode. No email, no password, no account required.
The database advantage
OpenCalorie uses Open Food Facts — a free, open, collaborative database of food products from around the world. Think of it as the Wikipedia of food.
Unlike closed databases locked behind expensive subscriptions, Open Food Facts is built and maintained by tens of thousands of contributors worldwide. Every barcode scan in OpenCalorie taps into this living, growing dataset — for free, forever.
Open Food Facts' open nature means the database is transparent, auditable, and community-corrected. No proprietary lock-in. No stale data from a single vendor. No paywall between you and accurate nutrition information.
Beyond basic nutrition, every product also includes Nutri-Score (an A–E health grade), NOVA group (a food processing classification), full ingredients list, and a direct link to the product page on Open Food Facts — all surfaced right inside OpenCalorie.

Privacy Policy

Last updated: June 24, 2025
Short version: OpenCalorie does not collect, sell, or share your personal data. Your food logs and profile are stored on your device and in your own private iCloud (CloudKit) database — only you can access them. We operate no custom servers.
OpenCalorie ("we", "the app") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what information OpenCalorie processes, where it is stored, and how it is used. OpenCalorie is a native iOS application. It has no custom backend server. Cloud storage is handled exclusively through Apple's CloudKit infrastructure using your own private iCloud account.
OpenCalorie stores only the data you explicitly provide within the app:
All data is stored on your device and, where iCloud is available, in your private CloudKit database. We have no access to any of it.
OpenCalorie does not collect, transmit, or store any of the following:
OpenCalorie uses one external service:
No other third-party SDKs, analytics tools, advertising networks, or tracking services are included in the app.
OpenCalorie uses Apple CloudKit as its cloud database. This is Apple's infrastructure — not a server we operate — and your data lives exclusively in your own private CloudKit database (container iCloud.slajob.OpenCalorie). Only your Apple ID can access it; we cannot.
This architecture means your data automatically survives app reinstalls and phone replacements: when you reinstall or switch to a new iPhone, OpenCalorie restores your meals, profile, and fridge from your private CloudKit database before prompting for setup.
Data is stored in two layers:
Local mode: if you choose "Continue without account" at the sign-in screen, your data is stored on-device only. No CloudKit sync occurs and your data cannot be restored if you delete the app or change devices.
We do not operate any servers that receive or store your personal data. We cannot access your data, reset your account, or recover lost data.
OpenCalorie can optionally read data from Apple HealthKit in two ways:
HealthKit data will never be shared with third parties or used for advertising.
OpenCalorie does not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided personal data within the app, please contact us so we can address the situation.
If you have any questions or concerns about this Privacy Policy, please contact us:
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected on this page with an updated effective date. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
